Wintering Bird Atlas, sampling in the Cola del Caballo (The Gorguel), the 28/11/2009.

The first "Atlas of Wintering Birds" in Spain is about to end its most participatory. One in which hundreds of volunteers in every corner of our country are leaving the field to gather the precious and valuable information, experts then analyzed and "give way" so we can all learn about the species, their distribution and abundance during the harsh winter season. This winter, 2009/2010, is the third and last of those engaged in this work.

XG86 The grid has one of the most beautiful and threatened Murcia: The Gorguel - Cola del Caballo. As a wedge is placed between the Portman Bay and the Sierra de la Fausilla (Valley of tailings). Inexplicably, or perhaps what was coming, he was outside the boundaries of the SPA of the Sierra de la Fausilla, right on its border, and therefore has no legal protection, at least the main part and largest area. After the environmental disaster that resulted in the construction of tailings macropuerto edge in the Gables, and that was the physical elimination of land species threatened flora and fauna and protected by national and regional law!, A new port project has set their sights on this stretch of coastline. The current draft of Gorguel macropuerto container is located in the waterfront area known as Horse Gorguel-Cola and also be introduced into the SPA, LIC and IBA in the Sierra de la Fausilla!.

To complete the sampling grid were XG86 8 transects (sampling linear) in the area of \u200b\u200bthe horse's tail in the area affected by the possible future port.

The results show, once again, the environmental quality of the area. From the ornithological point of view, that day we noted three important things:
- your area is a pair of Bonelli's Eagle (Hieraetus fasciatus), a species considered as "Vulnerable" in the National Catalogue of Threatened Species. The male and the female flew together on the first flights to synchronize their reproductive physiology.

- also the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) has territory here and flight hunting high and fast, does not preclude enjoyment for the eyes of the attentive observer.
- The winter of Dartford Warbler (Sylvia undata) develops on the bushes of the Sierra with densities about double the average of what might be considered normal in other places with similar characteristics. The Dartford, small passerine smaller than a sparrow, shows his wine-colored breast and belly proud at the top of the branches of shrubs. Meanwhile, as some males, even stop singing their pleasant song.

also 12 other species were observed: Red Partridge (Alectoris rufa), Thekla Lark (Galerida theklae) Airplane Rocker (Ptyonoprogne rupestris), meadow pipit (Anthus pratensis), Robin (Erithacus rubecula), Black Redstart (Phoenicurus ochruros), Sardinian warbler (Sylvia melanocephala), Common Chiffchaff (Phylloscopus collybita), Chaffinch (Frigilla coelebs), Serin ( Serinus Serinus), linnet (Carduelis cannabina) and Bunting (Emberiza cia).

To end this part of the workshop saw the presentation on this area and the proposed port by the Fundación Sierra Minera.
